Golden Finance reported that people familiar with the matter revealed that Trump’s advisers and officials from his newly formed Department of Government Efficiency asked him whether he could abolish the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Advisers also asked nominees being considered for positions at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) whether the deposit insurance business could be folded into the Treasury Department, some of them said. Banking executives are optimistic that Trump will relax a series of rules on capital buffers, consumer protections and industry consolidation reviews. But the FDIC's deposit insurance business is considered almost sacrosanct. Any move that even remotely threatens to undermine perceptions of deposit insurance could quickly trigger a chain reaction in the banking industry and, during a crisis, could exacerbate customer panic.
