Russell Watt, director of the U.S. Administration and Budget (OMB), took over as acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Friday night, while the government led by Elon Musk, reported by people familiar with the matter. Department of Efficiency (DOGE) officials took over and deleted CFPB’s X account on Friday night, and Musk posted a tweet “CFPB RIP” on the X platform on Friday afternoon with a tombstone emoticon.
The CFPB official website homepage displays an error message "404 page does not exist", but other parts of the website are still accessible. Sources said that the Ministry of Government Efficiency (DOGE) officials have obtained administrative authority for the CFPB system, including the content management system, the website backend and the active directory of personnel. The current atmosphere inside the CFPB is “full of frustration and anger.”
Neither the White House nor the CFPB responded to CNN's request for comment.
