According to news on January 16, a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen said on the Hoover Institution podcast that the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) is prioritizing the resumption of offline work for federal employees. He pointed out that the current average occupancy rate of federal office buildings in Washington, DC is only 25%, and many employees only come to the office for one or two days a month, and some employees even only come to the office for two days every two months. Andreessen mentioned that D.O.G.E.’s priorities include optimizing staffing, cutting government spending and streamlining regulations, and said the team has “very smart ideas” in these areas. He also questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office, saying the current prevalence of remote work poses productivity challenges.
