Golden Finance reports that social media giant Meta is replacing its fact-checking program with a user-driven “Community Notes” system, according to a statement on January 7. The move follows a pattern adopted by X, in which users collectively identify and provide context for potentially misleading posts. The move was recognized by the crypto community.
The platform added: "We thought this might be a better way to achieve our original intention of providing people with information about what they were seeing - and in a way that was less prone to bias."
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the change was intended to simplify the company's complex content moderation policies, which had previously led to overcensorship and errors. By giving diverse users the power to shape contextual information, Meta hopes to address issues of bias while maintaining the free flow of ideas on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Zuckerberg emphasized that the shift is in line with Meta's broader goal of returning to its roots as a center for free expression.
