Chain games have always been an area that I am looking forward to.
Although there are short-lived popular games on various public chains from time to time, they are basically inseparable from token incentives. Once the token incentive mechanism is removed, the remaining gameplay, experience and fun of the game will be difficult to compete with traditional Internet games.
It seems that token incentives are difficult to last for a long time, so these games above are just "episodes" in the field of chain games at best, and it may be difficult for them to stir up the banner of chain games.
In addition, there is also a type of chain games that focus on visual experience, fluency and other aspects. I think the space for this type of chain games is also very limited, because the areas where they work hard are the strengths of centralized servers, and it is difficult for blockchain technology to compete with them.
The blockchain game I am looking forward to is that people can create a brand new world on the chain through games.
A team called Lattice once created a game based on Optimism's second-tier extension that allows users to build their own games. In the game, a team announced the establishment of a "Crypto-Republic".
This game once caused a sensation among a small geek group, and I also introduced it in the article.
Lattice calls this type of game an Autonomous World.
Unfortunately, that game was only a beta version, and the Lattice team subsequently terminated the development of the game. However, they did not give up the goal of building an autonomous world, but instead focused on the construction of game infrastructure and the development of tools. In addition, they also specially built a second-layer extension Redstone based on Ethereum, and specifically positioned this chain to build an autonomous world.
But since then, I have never seen any interesting new projects on the chain travel circuit.
Recently, Bankless introduced two games that gave me a glimmer of hope.
One of them is Biomes.
This game is built on Redstone. It uses many components and tools developed by the Lattice team, allowing users to freely create their own "items" in the game and assign these "items" Various functions.
The game is still in a very early stage, and it may not be until the first quarter of next year that users can truly create and implement various functions in the game on a large scale.
I tried this game, but the overall feeling is still very rough, and the relevant information is also very poor. I played for a long time and even figured out some basic actions by myself. As for creating items and realizing the functions described in the game, I searched for a long time and couldn't even see a shadow.
Another game is Eternum on Starknet.
This game is developed by an early Loot-like NFT project on Ethereum (Realms) evolved. At that time, I also bought its NFT and mortgaged it.
But since then, I have forgotten about this project. After so many years, I thought this project was dead long ago, but I didn’t expect that it is still alive and has become a more attention-grabbing game on Starknet, and was even mentioned by Bankless.
The route taken by this project is very similar to Biomes. The goal is to build an autonomous world on the chain. The core gameplay is also very similar to Biomes, allowing users to freely create new worlds in the game.
Both games are currently very rudimentary, and the features they demonstrate are far from what they are described in their documentation. Their current situation is not worth talking about in detail. What makes them valuable and meaningful to me is that the direction they are moving in is the direction I have always expected, and they have been working hard to move in that direction for so many years.
In fact, there are already similar games in traditional games, and the most famous one at present is Roblox. But I always feel that the game built by Roblox is just a building on the beach. No matter how beautiful it is, it is not solid and it cannot become a new world. Only based on blockchain technology can we have a truly new world.
Whether an autonomous world is a direction for chain games to break the circle, at least for the moment, I think that apart from this direction, I see no other possibility of breaking the circle. So I very much look forward to the amazing progress that this type of project can bring us next year.
