U.S. Commerce Secretary Lutnik has hinted that he may withdraw funding from the promised chip bill, and he is pushing companies that meet federal semiconductor subsidies to significantly expand projects in the U.S., according to eight people familiar with the matter. The commerce secretary hopes that companies that receive subsidies from the 2022 chip and science bill follow in TSMC, which recently announced that it would invest another $100 billion in U.S. factories based on its previous $65 billion commitment, people familiar with the matter said. Lutnik’s goal is to get tens of billions of dollars in semiconductor investment commitments without increasing the size of federal grants. (Jin Shi)
